Düsseldorf, 03.12.2021 – The German Sustainability Award was presented for the 14th time on Friday evening in Düsseldorf. The award was given for innovative ideas for the future and top achievements in sustainability in the fields of business, research and local authorities. EU Commission President Dr. Ursula von der Leyen, Oscar winner Forest Whitaker, soul icon Joss Stone, music legend Chris de Burgh and superstar Billie Eilish received the honorary German Sustainability Award at the ceremony.
“Change only works if business, communities, research and each and every one of us shape it. This year, we have again honored courageous pioneers and given them a stage within the bounds of possibility,” says Stefan Schulze-Hausmann, initiator of the German Sustainability Award.
Long-time partner and Artist Relations Manager Stefan Lohmann is responsible for relations with the international stars and the entire live entertainment concept of the event: “This year we had to master special challenges again, but we can be more than satisfied with the result.
One of the absolute highlights of the award ceremony was the honorary award for Billie Eilish, who was virtually honored by the German astronaut Matthias Maurer (ESA) on board the international space station ISS. Not only Billie Eilish seemed to be moved by this special honor. In her acceptance speech, she thanked the astronauts for their special research achievements and for the award, which is particularly important to her because it is about the preservation of the Earth. Another emotional highlight was the presentation of the award to Joss Stone and the following performance with her band. The audience sang along enthusiastically and did not let the artist leave the stage. TikTok star Nathan Evans held the laudation for music legend Chris De Burgh. He was visibly moved to accept the award and then rocked the hall with his many hits. Long-lasting standing ovations were the result.
Nathan Evans won the hearts of the audience with his laudation with his Scottish accent and convinced the audience with his live performance of his huge hits from the worldwide charts.”
Honorary awards for special commitment
With the honorary awards, the German Sustainability Award Foundation recognizes prominent national and international actors who stand up for ecological and social issues and fight for positive change. EU Commission President Dr. Ursula von der Leyen accepted her award for the European Green Deal, and Oscar winner Forest Whitaker was honored for his many years of social commitment and dedication to peace. Chris de Burgh also received an honorary award for his numerous efforts on behalf of charitable causes. Actress Lily Cole was honored the evening before for her commitment as an activist, and soul icon Joss Stone received the award for her collaboration with aid organizations and artists on her Total World Tour in two hundred countries around the world. As one of the world’s most renowned climate researchers, Prof. Hans Joachim “John” Schellnhuber was also honored at the Design Award ceremony on December 2 for his extraordinary influence on politics, science and business.
Global star Billie Eilish is using her influence to raise awareness of the issues of climate change and conservation among the younger generation and to inspire them to take action. For this, she accepted the honorary award virtually. Billie Eilish is currently considered the most successful female artist in the music industry – with a particularly large fan base among younger people worldwide. Der Standard called her the “figurehead of a generation.”
Billie uses this immense reach (94 million follow her on Instagram alone) in social media and her songs to take a stand and bring her fans along with her. She not only wants to educate her fans about the urgency of the issue, but also encourage them to take action themselves and join organizations like Fridays for Future or Greenpeace. The 19-year-old singer herself supports the “Fridays for Future” movement and takes part in demonstrations. So also in Los Angeles during the visit of Greta Thunberg in 2019. Billie Eilish is planning her next tour to be as climate-friendly as possible. At her concerts, plastic is to be dispensed with completely. In an “Eco Village” on the concert grounds, the visitors:inside are to be sensitized to climate protection and informed about how they can maintain a more sustainable lifestyle. Billie lives vegan and encourages her fans to eat less meat.
Stefan Lohmann: “I am delighted that the German Sustainability Award always manages to open the eyes of the business community – and everyone else – while making sustainable companies visible and thus promoting them. The positive impact and charisma of this event is enormous. This also shows the huge potential of sustainability – also for brands and events – and we are only at the beginning! Sustainability and sustainable business is not the problem, but the solution!”
Stefan Schulze-Hausmann about Stefan Lohmann and the trustful cooperation: “His deep knowledge of sustainability, bite, patience and not shying away from prominent names make our cooperation one of the most important assets of the GSA.”
