Britischer Synthie-Pop at its Best
The extremely successful band with the sonorous band name Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark has been able to make a real name for itself in the field of new wave and synth pop. Especially in the 80s and 90s, the band can hold its own on the stages of this world and with their big OMD hits “Enola Gay” , “Walking the Milky Way” “Live and Die“, “Dreaming” and “Maid of Orleans” the music group conquers a huge fan base.
OMD – Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark – Biography and Career
The band is founded in 1978 by the two band members of the first hour Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys in Liverpool. British synth-pop pioneer Gary Numan takes the newly formed band on tour across the UK as his support act. A year later they released their first single “Electricity”, and the following year their debut album, which they named after their band, was released. From this album appears the single “Messages”.
The two founding members are joined by Malcolm Holmes on drums and Martin Cooper on saxophone and keyboards. The studio album “Organization” follows, from which probably their most famous single “Enola Gay”, their anti-war anthem, is released. In 1981, the extremely busy musicians publish their third studio album “Architecture & Morality”, from which they release “Souvenir”, “Joan of Arc” and “Maid of Orleans”. “Joan of Arc” can conquer No. 1 in the German charts and is considered the best-selling record in Germany in 1982. The studio album “Dazzle Ships” follows with “Genetic Engineering” and “Telegraph”. In 1984 they release the album “Junk Culture”, from which they take four singles, including their hit “Talking loud and clear”.
The group’s only Top 10 hit in the U.S. was If You Leave from the soundtrack of the film Pretty in Pink, which reached #4 on the American singles chart.
One album after the other
In the years 1985 to 1988, an album is released every year and one hit follows the next. The albums “Crush”, “The Pacific Age” as well as “The Best of” place extremely successfully in the international charts. In 1991, the studio album “Sugar Tax” is released with a total of four singles. In 1993 the band is completed with another band member, Stuart Kershaw taking over on drums. The two musicians Malcolm Holmes as well as Martin Cooper had left OMD in the meantime. In 1993, the album “Liberator” is released and three singles are released from it. 1996 follows the studio album “Universal” with the two singles “Walking on the Milky Way” and “Universal”. In 2010 the album “History of Modern” is released and “If you want it” is published as a single. In 2013 the album “English Electric” is recorded and in 2017 “The Punishment of Luxury”.
OMD delivers
The British sythie-pop band has now been around for more than forty years and the two founding members Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys are still with the party, even if they had separated in the meantime for a few years to put their own projects on the legs. Their stage experience as well as their constant enthusiasm for their music is absolutely unbroken and their unique style makes them so special. Their numerous fans all over the world are still loyal to them. Listening through the various tracks of their career, however, one thing stands out above all: Even though they have tried out new musical genres and experimented with their music from time to time over the years, they have remained absolutely true to their actual style and you can immediately hear that you are listening to a track by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark! Great!
