Who doesn’t know them, the greatest Level 42 hits of the extremely successful pop group from the 80s?
“Lessons in Love” – Level 42 Hits big time
Lessons in Love – Who doesn’t know it, this very biggest hit of the extremely successful pop group from the 80s? It consists of the two brothers Rowland Gould on guitar, called Boon, and Phil Gould, his sign drummer. Together with their friend Mark King, who is responsible for the bass and vocals, they have been on the road musically since they were schoolboys.
Keyboardist and singer Mike Lindup completes the band in 1979 and together they form the music group. First they call themselves 88, then later 42 (taken from the book “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”). Their music producer is Wally Badarou, who also works with the band as a composer and musician. Their music is influenced by funk and jazz and the two singers Mike Lindup and Mark King give their songs that special something with their unmistakable voices.
Level 42 Songs
The band starts with their debut song “Love Meeting Love” in 1980 and can hold its own in the British charts. Their second single “(Flying on the) Wings of Love”, produced by the record company Polydor, is also very successful.
Their first studio album, named after their band, climbs the UK charts. From their debut album, they couple the songs “Love Games“, “Turn it on” and “Starchild“. This is followed in 1982 by the album “The Pursuit of Accidents” with three singles. In 1983, the four British musicians record the studio album “Landing in the Light” (produced by Verdine White and Larry Dunn of Earth, Wind and Fire), from which three singles are released. In 1984 follows “True Colours” and in 1985 “World Machine“.
Hits galore
1986 is the band’s most successful year to date, because among the Level 42 songs, “Lessons in Love” is definitely their biggest hit ever, catapulting them definitively into the Olympus of the really big music bands. Released from their studio album “Running in the Family,” their hit also scored big in the U.S. and in Europe, holding its own in the upper echelons of the international charts.
Their other singles from the album, “Running in the Family,” “To be with you again” and “It’s over” have also been blessed with great success. The busy musicians from Great Britain continue to release album after album and release singles non-stop. They also tour the world’s concert halls and their fan base continues to grow. The band is considered an absolute live band and with their two strong-voiced frontmen and the perfect sound of their countless songs, they can also make a great name for themselves at their concerts.
The upheaval
In 1987, the two brothers and founding members Phil Gould as well as Rowland “Boon” Gould leave the band after there were disagreements with the concept of the music group among the band members. Phil Gould is not feeling well with his health and also resigns from the band for these reasons. During a US tour of Tina Turner, who accompanies the band, Paul Gendler and Neil Conti then step in.
Gary Husband and Steve Topping follow, but he leaves the band after a short time. Alan Murphy is a well-known guitarist in the late 90s and finally completes the music group. They release the album “Staring at the Sun”, from which the singles “Heaven in my Hands“, “Take a Look” and “Tracie” are released. In October 1989, the exceptional talent Alan Murphy dies of AIDS.
The success is unbroken
The band released the compilation album “Level Best” a short time later. In 1991, the musicians record the studio album “Guaranteed”, from which the singles “Guaranteed“, “Overtime” and “My Father’s Shoes” are released. In 1994, the album “Forever Now” follows with the singles “Forever Now“, “All over you” and “Love in a Peaceful World”. It is already their tenth album and this one can also successfully place itself in the international charts.
In 1994 the band had their last concert together at the Royal Albert Hall in London and the band was subsequently disbanded. The band members then embark on various solo careers. In 2002, the music group reformed again after Mark King secured the rights to the band’s name. They release the compilation album “The Definitive Collection” in 2006.
Joining the band are former band members Mark King, Gary Husband, Mike Lindup and Rowland “Boon” Gould, and newcomers Nathan King, Lydnon Connah and Sean Freeman. In 2006, the studio album “Retroglide” is released by the record label Universal. In 2010, the successful band can celebrate its 30th anniversary.
In 2020, the music group will release their compilation album “The Essential”. The band is still on the road with great stage presence and their enthusiasm for their music is unbroken.
