Leslie Clio – Hamburg down-to-earth meets international soul
When it comes to successful German artists, there’s no getting around her. Since 2012, the Hamburg-born artist, who has chosen to live in Berlin, has been stirring up the German music scene with her handmade pop-soul and convinces above all with her international sound and her unmistakable voice. English lyrics, musical influences from London, Nashville and Los Angeles – Leslie’s music sounds like the big wide world and that’s what makes her sound so unique in Germany.
Leslie Clio Biography – Success Story
With her debut “GLADYS” and her hit single “I couldn’t care less”, Hamburg-born Leslie Clio had her big breakthrough. She consolidated this success with the album “EUREKA”. After first dedicating herself to her soul roots, Clio then embraced the great pop – and on the album “PURPLE” she brings together her diverse influences for the first time with a somnambulistic sovereignty that can only come from grown experience. Leslie Clio is constantly developing and has grown up.
You won’t find any casting show appearances or the like in Leslie’s biography. She writes her songs herself and uses them as a platform to process personal experiences and to get the messages of a young, thoughtful woman out into the world. She sings about topics that everyone can identify with and thus hits the listener right in the heart. Lyrics about love, separation, human relationships, paired with her distinctive, expressive voice – that is the sound of Leslie Clio.
Nothing was given to the artist on her way to success. After she left her home in Hamburg with a fresh Abi in her pocket and moved to Berlin, she financed her life with waitressing jobs and put all her energy into music on the side. With the goal of her artistic work – the first studio album – always in mind, she transformed text ideas into songs, wrote, composed and did everything to fulfil her dream. An inimitable ambition for which she would eventually be rewarded.
Her debut album entered the album charts at number 11, which immediately earned her a nomination in the category “National Rock/Pop Artist” at the most important German music award, the ECHO. Television appearances on Inas Nacht or Schlag den Raab, festival appearances at Rock am Ring and Rock im Park, among others. Her music has been heard on television and in films such as the hit movie “Der Schlussmacher”.
A successful tour of their own and support slots with Phoenix, Bosse, Keane and Joss Stone. The singles “I couldn’t care less”, “Told you so” and “Twist the knife” became long-running hits on the radio and the videos had over five million views on YouTube. The second album Eureka is also a great success with singles like “Eureka” and “My heart ain’t that broken”, which continue the success of the debut album.
The single “Eureka” was chosen by Sat1 as the title track of the series Mila. Leslie was also a member of the successful music show Sing mein Song on Vox TV.
One of the strongest and most confident female voices in the German music scene
With her distinctive and expressive voice and her very own musical and lyrical variations, views and interpretations of the web of interpersonal relationships, Leslie Clio is one of the strong and confident voices in the German music business.
There is still probably no artist in Germany who wraps both love and break-up stories in such positive sound garments as Leslie Clio. She convinces even the doubters in the last corner that suffering, moping and (self-)pity are really just wasted time. Roll up your sleeves and look ahead, that has always been her principle.
At the end of 2015, Leslie Clio finally takes the time she needs to get a little distance from the hustle and bustle of the big pop business. And it is typical of this courageous woman that she does not compromise on this issue either. So Leslie Clio turns her back on her adopted home of Berlin for a while and goes to Hawaii.
“I said goodbye to a lot of people,” says Clio, “and just sold everything: every plate, every fork, every spoon that had meaning in my life. It was a radical new beginning. In Hawaii, I lived in a house with five other people who grew their own vegetables and whom I could help harvest. But most of all, I rediscovered who I am and what I want in a longer process there.”

New start for Leslie Clio with the album “Purple”
New start for Leslie Clio with the album “Purple”The time off was completely worth it. Because when Leslie Clio returns to Berlin, her head is full of new melodies and ideas, some of which she has already recorded. Clio immediately heads to the studio and lets things take their course. “I’m practically bursting with creativity and new ideas after so long,” she says with a laugh.
“In the last few years, I was always in the tunnel, I had to force myself to put on the brakes for a moment. The fact that she did, however, has opened her eyes to many things. “I now just know again who I am, what I can do and above all what I want,” she says. “I’ve experienced so much and changed, I’m now 30 years old and have become a woman. The moment to make a new record was just spot on.”
This relaxed clarity now seeps out of every note of PURPLE. After another six months in Stockholm and her own studio in Berlin, where she lined the ideas and fragments from Hawaii and condensed them into songs, she went into the studio with producers Olaf Opal and Willy Laster. There, a body of work emerged on which the character and the many musical colours that define this woman come to full bloom for the first time. “It was by far the smoothest production of my career so far,” she says. “Because I made this record completely for myself, out of an absolute inner necessity and free of any expectations.” And that’s what you hear.
But even though the artist has thus succeeded in taking a huge musical step, this is still very clearly a Leslie Clio album. Thematically, PURPLE picks up where her previous works left off with ease: “It’s still about love, heartbreak and idiots,” she says with a laugh.
In 2019, Leslie Clio embarked on a successful German tour with Night of the Proms.
