This booking and artist information about Mike and the Mechanics is for a musical project that has a remarkable history of more than three decades. Launched in 1985 by none other than Mark Rutherford, bassist, guitarist, songwriter and Genesis band member of the first hour, the productivity of “Mike and the Mechanics” is still today and for the foreseeable future no end.
Die musikalischen Mechaniker lassen sich nicht unterkriegen
But first a review: We write the time of the early eighties, after the solo projects “Smallcreep’s Day” and “Acting Very Strange”, which can show decent sales figures, but apparently do not satisfy Rutherford, he tries it in 1985 with the formation of a band: “Mike and the Mechanics” is born to stay. The band, that at the time of the foundation is composed of Rutherford (electric guitar, bass), Adrian Lee (keyboards), Peter Van Hooke (drums) and Christopher Neil (production). The singers Paul Carrack and Paul Young (not to be confused with the British soul singer Paul Anthony Young) will also join.
Successful from the start …
The early years of Mike and the Mechanics are marked by success and are crowned by the second studio album “The Living Years” released in 1988, which reaches gold status in the UK and the USA. The single of the same name climbs to number one in the USA and stays in the charts for an impressive 20 weeks. In Great Britain, the band is no less successful (number two, 11 weeks in the charts), and in Germany, too, “Living Years” is a respectable success (album number 16, single number 13).

Always new and always with a touch of Genesis
The sound of Mike and the Mechanics can be confidently located somewhere between pop and rock. The synth sound of the early days is complemented in later years by the increased attention to blues and soul. But also the electronic sound increases in the 2000s: The “mechanics” are passionate about screwing and trying out new things. However: a breath Genesis resonates of course. Fortunately, Mike Rutherford can never really break away from his musical roots of the Genesis era. Last but not least, a look at the discography of the “Mechanics” reveals that there are always large gaps between the released albums. The reasons are on the one hand Mike Rutherford’s musical services for the Genesis formation (among others Phil Collins), either for album productions (until 1997) or for the never-ending best-of-concerts of the classic rock band, which can still assure itself of a large fan community worldwide.
Another reason has to do with the moving band history of Mike and the Mechanics itself. The downs, especially those, should not be missing in a “Booking and Artist Information Mike and the Mechanics”, because only they make the band, testify to their (especially Mike Rutherford’s) unbreakable tenacity to devote themselves with passion and love to the band and their music. Thus, in 2000, the band is shaken for the first time by the early death of their lead singer Paul Young, who makes them think about quitting. But the remaining members fight their way out of this gloomy time and four years later Rutherford and Co. release another CD with “Rewired”.

Great comeback
But the next setback follows a short time later, in 2006, when the remaining singer Paul Carrack announces his departure and then starts a successful solo career. For quite a while the music rests, until in 2011 Mike Rutherford reactivates the project and with Andrew Roachford and Tim Hower can win two gifted singers for the project. The band celebrates their comeback with a new line-up and brings Mike and the Mechanics back into the game with their seventh studio album “The Road”. Extensive tours follow, during which the thoroughbred musicians create a buzz and advance to a sought-after festival band. In 2017, the band delivers another album with this line-up, “Let Me Fly”.
Escapades and rock star airs have always been alien to the band, for them only one thing counts, and in this case that is not a hackneyed phrase, because the band’s history tells of it: how the desire to make music prevails, against all odds.
