Joss Stone remains an unknown after her birth on 11 April 1987 in Dover, England. Even in her small home village, the county of Devon, no one knows the name. For sixteen years. The world only learns of Joss Stone in 2003 through an audition in New York (City, USA). She travelled with her mother and her own soulful interpretation of On The Radio (Donna Summer) immediately impressed the producer of S-Curve.

Steve Greenberg of S-Curve immediately signs the singer, originally born Joscelyn Eve Stroker. With her stage name, which she acquired after winning a talent competition two years earlier, she steps into the spotlight for the first time. Several cover songs were written within a few days. Among them: well-known soul greats like Angie Stone, Questlove (The Roots), and guitarist Little Beaver.

A record deal alone does not make you famous. Greenberg knows this too and decides to re-release lesser-known titles from the 50s to the 70s. The album The Soul Session was released in September 2003 in Great Britain, five months later in Germany. The breakthrough is not long in coming. In Germany alone, the young artist dominated the charts for 37 weeks. Two million albums crossed the counter. Gold in Germany and the USA as well as platinum in Great Britain marked the beginning of the rise of the newly discovered soul legend.

More Joss Stone Hits

The album Mind, Body & Soul is released in 2004. The artist co-wrote eleven of the fourteen tracks. Supported by Beth Gibbons of Portishead, it immediately reaches number one in the English charts. The following year, the studio album is awarded gold in Germany.

Various singles, live recordings of concerts with songs from their first two albums on DVD, and first music videos follow until 2011. Further studio albums follow on from this: Introducing, Colour Me Free and LP1. For her fourth album, the artist founded her own label, Stone’d Records.

In 2015, Joss Stone inspires with reggae elements together with Damian Marley, member of the band Super Heavy. The album Water For Soul is born and is successfully launched during concerts in Zurich and Murten (Switzerland).

From 2004 to 2010, Joss Stone contributed tracks to the soundtracks of various films, including James Bond: The Blood Stone and Sex And The City. She enriches the cinema world with smaller, mostly musical interludes. In the video game James Bond: The Blood Stone she plays Bondgirl. As a dubbing artist she lends her voice to other actresses. Around 2005 and 2006, she appeared briefly as a model, but then decided to pursue her real passion: enriching the world with soul pop!

After a creative break, the artist surprised everyone in January 2019 with the single My Love Goes On. Already in the following month, the airplay charts of various radio stations are stormed. She was also part of the Night of the Proms Tour.

Social involvement

With her Total World Tour, the artist announces her intention to travel to 200 countries. For this purpose, she will enter Syria illegally in March 2019. Further stops on her extraordinary tour include performances in the Sultanate of Brunei, Tajikistan and communist North Korea. The following planned performance in Iran fails at the border. Although it is not illegal for EU citizens to enter the country, she is imprisoned and immediately deported. The performance is banned. Stone reports on Instagram that she, as a woman, was not allowed to do so.

The Total World Tour has a charitable character and achieves worldwide media attention. It remains to be seen when the tour will continue. Which is to be expected – there are still some countries to come.

The artist lends her name to the Joss Stone Foundation. She is committed to development aid, human rights and the protection of species. The artist is a convinced vegetarian and supports PETA, the best-known organisation for the ethical treatment of animals by humans.
