With her song “A Night Like This” Caro Emerlad landed a mega-hit, her debut album “Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor” stayed at the top of the Dutch album charts for an unbelievable 30 weeks and sold over 300,000 copies in the first year after its release alone: Caro Emerald became an international phenomenon.

The very special sound

Her songs have one thing in common above all: they are insanely catchy, and that despite the fact that the musician is as versatile as can be. The Dutchwoman manages to create a mosaic of swing, jazz, pop and chansons, which at the same time merges with modern beats without seeming overloaded or jumbled.

The beginnings of an exceptional singer

The Dutch pop and jazz singer was born on April 26, 1981 under the name Caroline van der Leeuw in Amsterdam and studied jazz singing at the “Conservatorium van Amsterdam”.

After graduating in 2005, two years later she was asked to record the vocal part for a demo recording by the two music producers and Jan van Vieringen and the Canadian singer Vince Degiorgio. Since the actually scheduled singer was prevented.

This collaboration resulted in Emerald’s first single “Back It Up”, which was released in 2009 and earned her first chart placements in the Netherlands and Germany.

“Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor” – an album of superlatives

In December 2009, the singer had her big international breakthrough. The song “A Night Like This” was the first single from her debut album “Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor” and secured a Top 10 position in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands. In addition, Caro Emerald’s hit was awarded a gold record in Austria and even a platinum record in Germany and Switzerland.

However, these successes were only a harbinger for the success of their debut album, which was released in 2010. “Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor” went straight to number one on the Dutch album charts and defended this position for a whopping 30 weeks! It thus replaced Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” as the album that dominated the charts for the longest time.

Emerald’s album sold over 350000 copies in the Netherlands alone, was the most successful album there in 2010 and went six-times platinum.

International success

But that’s not all: In total, over 1.3 million records of the first album were sold in Europe and it was awarded a platinum record in Poland, the United Kingdom and Germany. In addition, other awards followed, including the MTV Europe Music Award, the Golden Camera 2012 in the category “Best Music International” and in the same year the Echo as “Newcomer of the Year International”. Previously, Emerald had already won the European Border Breaker Award in 2011.

Just like their first album, their second studio album “The Shocking Miss Emerald” was also convincing. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the album entered the album charts at the third place, in her home country and the United Kingdom Emerald managed to claim the pole position for themselves.

Caro Emerald as a celebrated live artist

The far-reaching and lasting success of the Dutch exceptional singer is not least due to her outstanding live performance in almost all of Europe. Caro Emerald’s songs have been heard at concerts in Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Russia, Hungary, France, Austria, Bulgaria, Hung. Poland, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Italy.

In addition, the live album “Live at the Heineken Music Hall” was released in 2011, featuring a December 2010 concert by the singer in Amsterdam. The album also features Caro Emerald’s hits “A Night Like This,” “This Man,” “Stuck” and “Back It Up,” among others.
