Sustainability has arrived in the music and entertainment industries. The German Sustainability Award’s honorary prize to Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall, who together with Radiohead and other representatives of the British music industry has declared a climate emergency, is proof of this. They demand an immediate government reaction to protect all life on earth.
The British musician is one of the best-known soul and pop singers. With Simply Red he has had worldwide success since 1984 and sold more than 70 million records worldwide. The breakthrough came with the Manchester band’s debut album “Picture Book” (1985), followed by countless more successful albums and songs. Hits like “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” (1989) and “Holding Back The Years” (1995) belong to the classics of music history. The new Simply Red album “Blue Eyed Soul” (2019) adds another chapter to this worldwide success story.
Stefan Lohmann – Artist Relations Manager:
“For me it is always a special pleasure to succeed in inspiring such outstanding legends of music history for the activities of the German Sustainability Award. Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall’s acceptance of the award is also a special honour for us. With Mick Hucknall, Radiohead and many other international artists and a large part of the British music industry declaring a climate emergency, we have succeeded in increasing the pressure on politics and the economy. Because, behind the artists are many millions of fans. And the German Sustainability Award is definitely the best platform in Europe to formulate demands on politics, business, science and society,” says Stefan Lohmann, Artist Relations Manager responsible for the international stars and live entertainment concept of the German Sustainability Award.
Mick Hucknall on sustainability and his demands on governments and economy:
“This earth is the only home we have and I am saddened when I see the way we humans neglect the welfare of our planet and one another. We all need to consider what we can do to bring about change, particularly governments, industry leaders, and all in positions of power, in order to secure a better future for our children.“ Mick Hucknall – Simply Red
German Sustainability Award Mick Hucknall – Honorary Laureate Reason:
Since the beginning of his career, Mick Hucknall has used his reputation to support disadvantaged people. He is committed to nonprofit organizations such as SOS Children’s Villages to provide support, education and a chance for a better life for children and young people.
Together with international artists, he takes a position in humanitarian crises – for example at events such as the concert “Refugee Voices for Darfur” for the victims of the civil war in Sudan and the “Concert of Hope” on World AIDS Day.
Hucknall demonstrates his connection with nature in a biodiversity project on the River Finn in northern Ireland. Together with his bandmate Chris de Margary, Hucknall was committed to the conservation of wild salmon and succeeded in doubling the wild salmon population. Mick Hucknall is part of the “Music Declares Emergency” initiative, which declared a climate emergency on behalf of the music industry. They demand that the British government reverse the loss of biodiversity and achieve climate neutrality by 2030.

“There is no agent in Germany who has understood our subject so well,” says initiator Stefan Schulze-Hausmann. “It’s all about getting artists who are really interested in sustainability to perform with us. But the artists’ interest is not enough. It takes a lot of skill and professionalism to put together the whole package behind the visit of a national and international star“.
