The German ”Deutschpop” is known for its soulful lyrics that speak from the soul of the listener, inspire reflection and convey: “That’s how it feels!” This music scene has been shaped by many unforgettable voices. One of them is the German songwriter Purple Schulz. In the mid-80s he appeared in the musician’s heaven and is still known for one thing: he doesn’t mince his words! This character trait was mainly influenced by his experiences and childhood memories in the post-war period.
Purple Schulz – an enrichment for the music scene and society
Purple Schulz was born in Cologne in 1956. His civil name is Rüdiger Schulz. He is married to his manager Eri and has three children with her. He got his name “Purple” because as a young musician on the organ he loved to play the song “Child in Time” by Deep Puple.
Besides the organ, Purple Schulz also learned to play the piano during his childhood. Especially his older brothers had a strong influence on him in musical terms. At the age of 16, he had his first appearance in front of an audience together with his then prog-rock band “d’accord”. His breakthrough in Germany, Austria and Switzerland came in 1984 with his profound single “Sehnsucht”.
One after the other the German pop singer celebrated further successes and with his entertainment talent became a must-have of every stage show. From 2007 to 2010 Purple Schulz formed the duo “Gemeinsam Sache” together with the German songwriter and rock singer Heinz Rudolf Kunze, in the course of which about 150 shows were created. And also after the end of the time the friendship of the two remained.
His song “Sehnsucht” was considered one of the greatest hymns of runaways in GDR times. This came about when he performed on stage in 1989 and 1990 as part of the “Rockpoeten” tour in the East German region. A DJ who played this song had to reckon with a night in the cell at that time – the reason for this is the song line “Ich will raus”.
Purple Schulz – Social commitment
He toured Germany for the Nokia Night of Proms with Zuccero and Status Quo. Already 3 years after his big breakthrough he was part of the line-up of one of the biggest festivals in Germany, besides many other well-known show acts like Herbert Grönemeyer and the Toten Hosen. The Anti-WAAhhnsinn-Festival was a politically motivated festival to protest against the reprocessing plant in Wackersdorf in Bavaria.
So Purple Schulz is not only characterized by his grandiose music, his boyish smile and the poetic lyrics. Social commitment has always been a part of his life. So he dedicated one of his most famous songs “Fragezeichen” and its music video to the disease dementia, which he had to experience in his own family rows. In addition, the German songwriter uses countless other opportunities to use his unmistakable voice to address issues that are socially taboo.
”Sehnsucht” – this will be forever remembered
Even after the high of his musical career had slowly ebbed away, he decided to remain a part of society and not to keep his opinions to himself. So he decided to publish his autobiography “Sehnsucht bleibt“ (the loning remains) in 2015 to tell about a time when music and many other things had a different meaning and to encourage people to think and question.
To this day the German pop singer can be found regularly on German stages. For him, the most important thing is to give something back to the people and when he looks into the happy faces of his audience after the show, the effort was worth it. He also still plays the songs from his early days at his current performances and has noticed that today’s audience is also enthusiastic about his songs.
