Music from the 90s: this is Lisa Stansfield. With her number one hit “All Around The World” she established Soul-Pop internationally in 1989.
Lisa Stansfield – “British Queen Of White Soul”
The British singer was born on April 11, 1966 in Heywood, County Lancashire (now District Greater Manchester) and grew up in the neighbouring town of Rochdale. At the age of 14 she won a talent competition – singing and dancing. Afterwards she was allowed to host the children’s programme “Razzamatazz”, which was broadcast on the BBC at the time.
From the first band Blue Zone directly to a solo career
In 1983 Lisa Stansfield founded a band together with her school friends Ian Devaney and Andy Morris, which from 1985 on performed under the name “Blue Zone”. Her catchy, expressive voice caught the attention of the record company Big Life Records, with whom she soon signed a record deal. From now on she performed as a solo singer under her birth name, but her former band members Devaney and Morris remained as creative heads in the team around the musician.
First white singer in the R’n’B charts
After “This Is the Right Time” (1989), her first own solo single, she landed her big success with “All Around The World”, with which she became the first white singer to enter the Billboard R’n’B charts, followed by the album “Affection” in 1990. Lisa Stansfield had catapulted herself to the top of the world with this album and has since been known as the “British Queen of White Soul”.
For the song “All Around The World” she received the Ivor Novello Award for “best contemporary” in 1990 and “best international song” in 1991. Also in 1991, she received the “World Music Award” as the best-selling British performer, and the BRIT Award as “Best British Young Artist“.
In the same year, together with other internationally successful artists such as Neneh Cherry, Annie Lennox and Erasure, she recorded the album “Red Hot + Blue” for AIDS-benefits, which was intended as a tribute to the artist Cole Porter, and to which she contributed the Porter title “Down The Depths“.
With the single “All Woman” from her second album Real Love, she set a new record: Lisa Stansfield reached number 1 in the Billboard R&B charts for the third time.
Charity Projects
In April 1992 Lisa Stansfield took part in a benefit concert in honour of Queen singer Freddy Mercury, who died in 1991, at London’s Wembley Stadium – where she presented her own version of the Queen world success “I Want to Break Free“.
Together with George Michael and the remaining Queen band members, she also interpreted the song “These Are The Days of Our Lives” at this concert, which stormed the charts shortly afterwards. The proceeds from this song were donated to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, a foundation dedicated to fighting the immunodeficiency disease AIDS.
In the course of the 1990s almost one hit by Lisa Stansfield chased the next. Her expressive soul voice could also be heard in film soundtracks for movies such as “Bodyguard” or “An Immoral Offer” and thus shaped the music of the 1990s.
Lisa Stansfield herself made her debut as an actress in 1999 in the romantic musical comedy “Swing“, for which she received consistently positive reviews. Her album “Biography” – based on her music from the 90s – also became a bestseller in 2003.
Comeback in 2005
With “Treat Me Like A Woman” in 2005, she again achieved a chart hit, with which she could continue her success almost seamlessly. In the early summer of 2013 Lisa Stansfield completed a major tour of Europe. For many lovers of music from the 90s, she has become an established pop star with her unique, velvety powerful voice.
She has managed to create a unique style that will always set her apart from the mass of important and less important musical stars. After a four-month marriage in 1987 with the Italian costume designer Augusto Grassi, Lisa Stansfield has been married to her long-time bandmate Ian Devaney since 1998 and lives in Dublin.
