Jamie Cullum (born August 20, 1979) is an English jazz-pop singer-songwriter and radio host. Although he is mainly a singer and pianist, he also accompanies himself on other instruments, including guitar and drums. Since April 2010, he has hosted a weekly evening jazz show on BBC Radio 2.
Jamie Cullum – Artist information
Jamie Cullum was born in Essex, England, on August 20, 1979, the son of an Israeli father and a Burmese mother. The love of music seems to have been laid in the cradle of the multi-talent. Coming from a family of musicians, he began singing lessons at an early age and learned to play the piano and guitar. Together with his parents he is already on stage as a child and inspires with his short performances. Music lessons are not enough for him and so he perfects his musical skills largely as an autodidact. While still a teenager, Jamie Cullum began playing in clubs and bars to finance his studies (literature and film). The first step into a lasting world career as an all-round musical talent is made.
Jamie Cullum has been married to writer Sophie Dahl since 2010 and is now the father of two daughters.
Jamie Cullum – the breakthrough
The first self-produced album “Heard It All Before” is sold by Jamie Cullum in a small edition only at his gigs. During a concert, he succeeds in arousing the interest of jazz bassist Geoff Gascoyne. He invites him to play on one of his recordings. This resulted in a collaboration that lasted for years, during which several albums were produced. The multi-instrumentalist Cullum quickly makes a name for himself in the music scene. Shortly after his second album “Pointless Nostalgic” is released, a jazz label takes notice and signs him. However, since singer-songwriter Jamie Cullum loves to mix different styles, he becomes known to a wider audience primarily as a crossover musician. In his impartiality on stage, his sometimes acrobatic interludes around his concert grand piano and his ingenuity, Jamie Cullum’s ability to connect with his audience is evident. This reinforces his reputation for being as gifted an entertainer as he is a versatile musician.
Publications and awards
His third album, “Twentysomething,” appears at the end of 2003 and brings Cullum his final breakthrough. 2.5 million records sold and a British Jazz Award make him popular not only in the jazz scene. Jamie Cullum can also impress as a singer-songwriter, because in addition to cover versions of well-known jazz and rock songs, the CD also contains many of his own pieces, some written with his older brother Ben. More albums like “Catching Tales”, “Pursuit”, “Momentum” and “Interlude” follow, which are followed by sold-out concert tours worldwide on the occasion of each new release. The thoroughbred musician is also a welcome guest at renowned jazz festivals such as Montreux or the North Sea Jazz Festival. But all this is not enough for the multi-talented musician. In search of further challenges, the popular musician also tries his hand very successfully as a film composer. Jamie Cullum received a Golden Globe nomination for the title melody of the Clint Eastwood film Gran Torino.
Charity
The artist released his own single in 2018 for the charity foundation Children in Need. For years he has also supported other organizations such as Breast Cancer Care or Samaritans and plays at Rock for Dafur. His commitment to environmental protection can be seen in his work for the Soil Association, among others.
