Every year on New Year’s Eve, Europe’s biggest hit sounds out once again when the “Final Countdown” is set to begin at the turn of the year. But the Swedish hard rock band has considerably more classics in its repertoire, which have gained worldwide fame.

Europe Band history – Biography

Already in 1979 mastermind Joey Tempest gathered some friends around him and founded the band “Force”. The four musicians played classical, English-speaking hard rock, which was rather unusual for the time in Sweden. In 1982 the band was renamed to Europe. This happened on the occasion of a big band competition, which could be won immediately. The big prize in the form of a record deal with the label “Hot Records” was used to produce the self-titled album, which immediately reached a place in the Swedish charts.

Already on the second album “Rock the Night” was released, one of the unforgotten hits of the Swedish band. In the course of the 1980s further albums, single releases and numerous number one placements followed. Of course, the songs “The Final Countdown”, “Carrie”, “Superstitious” or “Prisoners in Paradise” deserve special mention.

However, the band was not able to follow up on the huge success of “The Final Countdown”. The reason for this was also a change in the musical style. This led to the band disbanding in 1992 and the members concentrated on solo projects.

Since 2004, however, Europe have been back again and have already produced several new albums since then. Their live program is still full of hits and incomparable energy, which inevitably takes the audience back to the fantastic times of the 80s.

Awards

The Swedish rock giants have won numerous awards during their career. In total, their albums and singles have won 15 platinum, 21 gold and 1 silver awards. Of course, “The Final Countdown” was responsible for most of these honours. In Spain the album even reached an incredible 4-fold plain. In the band’s history, which now goes back more than four decades, more than eight million records have been sold.
