With songs like “We Got the Beat“, “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” or “Circle in the Sand” she stormed the charts in Europe and America: Belinda Carlisle has sung some of the most successful hits of the 80s both as a singer of the Go-Go’s and as a solo artist.
From a nightclub to the Walk of Fame: Belinda Carlisle with the Go-Go’s
Belinda Carlisle starts her career as a drummer in a punk band, but soon she becomes the lead singer of the Go-Go’s. The band’s first album, “Beauty and the Beat“, conquered the charts, went double platinum and turned the Go-Go’s into the first all-female band in history to land a number one hit with self-written songs and self-played instruments. Especially the songs “We Got the Beat” and “Our Lips Are Sealed” became hits of the 80s.
The Go-Go’s second album, “Vacation“, also reached the top ten and went gold in the USA. Another album followed before the band split up in 1985 and Belinda Carlisle went her own way. But even after the official breakup the band still comes together for tours.
Her impact is also honoured many years later: as a member of the band, Belinda Carlisle was awarded a star on the Walk of Fame in 2011 in front of the nightclub, where the band had their first performance, and in 2018 a musical about the activity of the Go-Go’s was announced.
From punk rock to glam-pop: new direction in music
After the breakup of the Go-Go’s, Belinda Carlisle continued solo and released her first album “Belinda” in 1986. The album, which departs from the Go-Go’s usual punk rock and is more inspired by pop music, went gold in the USA. The accompanying single “Mad About You” also reached a chart position in Great Britain.
However, the Californian singer achieved the greatest success with her second album “Heaven on Earth“, which was nominated for a Grammy. Singles like “I Get Weak” and “Circle in the Sand” reached the top ten in America and Great Britain and also got positions in other European countries. The song “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” even reached No. 1 in 3 countries and got silver in Great Britain.
The Carlisle’s following albums were also successful. For example, the song “Leave a Light On” from her third studio album, “Runaway Horse“, joins a series of hits of the 80s. Over the years, more than 30 singles, 8 studio albums and various compilation albums have been produced and Belinda Carlisle has been nominated for the American Music Awards, the Brit Awards, the Independent Music Awards and Music Week Awards.
But the singer is not satisfied with just playing the familiar glam-pop that turned many of her songs into hits of the 80s. Instead, Belinda Carlisle also goes new ways. In 2007, for example, she released an album of chansons in French – several songs are covers of songs of well-known singers like Édith Piaf. In 2017 the album “Wilder Shores“, inspired by Buddhist chants, was also released.
Her life is not only about music: engagement with a personal touch
Apart from her music, Belinda Carlisle is committed to several charitable causes – often inspired by her own life. Since her son’s coming out, she has been supporting the rights of the LGBT community, and as a long-time alcoholic and drug addict she has supported addiction centers such as the Center for Dependency, Addiction and Rehabilitation in Colorado.
After she herself converted to Buddhism and found the way out of her personal crisis through yoga, among other things, the singer became a certified yoga teacher. She practices her pacifist attitude also through her vegan lifestyle, as she also rejects violence against animals.
In order to help in this field, she performed together with the Go-Go’s already in the 90s to support the animal protection organisation PETA. Belinda Carlisle is also co-founder of the Animal People Alliance, which helps impoverished women in India to care for animals off the street.
