Alphaville was the German band of the 80s. Founded in 1983 in Münster, the pop band was one of the biggest in the eighties. Front singer Marian Gold had played together with Bernhard Lloyd and Frank Mertens first under the band name Forever Young, but already one year later they called themselves Alphaville after the film of the same name by the French director Jean-Luc Godard.

At the beginning of 1985, the German charity project “Band für Afrika” (Band for Africa) was launched, modelled on Band Aid by British singer Bob Geldof. The joint project was produced by numerous German artists such as Alphaville, Herbert Grönemeyer, Nena and BAP and reached number 3 in the German charts. In Cologne, the pop artists performed together on the big stage for a good cause. The joint project attracted worldwide attention beyond the German borders and was sustainably successful.

The front man Marian Gold, whose real name is Hartwig Schierbaum, has been a member of the German synthpop band from the very beginning.
