First as a member of the band Alice Cooper and later as a solo artist under the same name, Alice Cooper has been inspiring fans of rock music worldwide for over 50 years. Thanks to his distinctively raw voice and shocking stage shows, Cooper became one of the elite rock musicians of the 80s.
Godfather of Shock Rock
The charismatic rock musician Alice Cooper, born Vincent Damon Furnier, was born on 4 February 1948 in Detroit, Michigan. First as a member of the band Alice Cooper and later as a solo artist under the same name, Alice Cooper has been inspiring fans of rock music worldwide for over 50 years. Thanks to his distinctively raw voice and shocking stage shows, the band Alice Cooper and later the solo artist Alice Cooper became icons of the 70s and 80s.
The musical career of the so-called “Godfather of Shock Rock” begins quite pious: In 1964, at the age of 16, the young Vincent wins a talent competition at his school together with four friends. The songs that help Vincent Furnier and Co. to win were written by the Beatles. Using wigs and costumes, the Five adapt their appearance to that of the British model and change the lyrics so that they relate to the school athletics team.
Although only one of the five masters an instrument – the guitar – which is why the other band members only pretend to play on their instruments, the resonance of their classmates is overwhelming. This finally motivates Furnier and his friends to want to perform as a band in the future – the “Spiders” are born!
They played cover songs of the Rolling-Stones and Yardbirds for four years before they finally renamed themselves “Alice Cooper” in 1968. What follows is the big breakthrough. By means of laser effects, costumes and torture props the band combines their now self-written songs with spectacular horror shows, which polarize and guarantee enthusiasm! The album “Billion Dollar Babies” alone has sold more than a million copies to date. Soon after veneer becomes one of the big stars of the 80s.
Alice Cooper – one of the great stars of the 80s
The characteristic and shocking stage shows with singer Cooper at the center, originated in the seventies. In 1974 the band split up and Alice Cooper began his legendary solo career. His first solo album “Welcome to My Nightmare” is released just one year after the dissolution of the band. Promptly it turns out to be a great success: It sells over a million copies internationally and although the songs of the concept album are all related to each other and describe the nightmares of the protagonist Steven musically, the releases “Only Women Bleed”, “Department of Youth” and the title song “Welcome to My Nightmare” also develop into sales hits.
This is followed by a world tour, which once again captivates with the most elaborate live shows. With the help of projections, dancers, stage sets and costumes, Cooper manages to captivate his audience with the nightmares of album protagonist Steven.
The enthusiastic audience experiences during this electrifying live show beside dancing skeletons, faceless demons and an almost three meter tall cyclops also a huge mechanical spider – Cooper keeps his reputation! Over the next twelve years Cooper will release a total of 8 albums, including “Alice Cooper Goes to Hell” and “Constrictor“.
In 1989 the album “Trash” was released, which contrary to its title is by no means a failure, but an important reason why Cooper is still regarded as one of the great stars of the 80s. It achieves gold status in several countries and even platinum status in the United States – not surprising, since it sells a total of over one and a half million copies.
In addition, the album delivers great single hits with title decouplings like “Poison”, which also sells over a million copies, and “Hell Is Living Without You“, which do not only Cooper fans. In total, Cooper has released 27 albums over his career of more than 50 years, making him not only one of the great stars of the 80s, but also a perpetual force in rock music.
The noble Alice: Coopers charities
The rock legend is strongly committed to social projects and regularly donates to charities. For example, Cooper donates to the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center and the Rape Foundation, which supports victims of rape and abuse.
He also hosts the annual Alice Cooper’s Annual Rock & Roll Golf Classic Charity Golf Tournament and is the founder of the Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Teen Center in Phoenix, which offers young people the opportunity to develop their musical talents.
