The Irish musician Rea Garvey receives the Honorary Award of the German Sustainability Award 2018 for his comprehensive social and ecological commitment. The award ceremony took place on 07.12.2018 in Düsseldorf.
German Sustainability Award 2018
The German Sustainability Award is Europe’s largest award for ecological and social commitment. The award is sponsored by the Stiftung Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis e.V. The foundation was founded by Stefan Schulze-Hausmann and Dr. Florian Wecker and honors exemplary sustainability achievements in business, communities, architecture and research. The Stiftung Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis e. V. regularly supports organizations and projects that promote the idea of sustainable development through donations. Irish musician Rea Garvey received an honorary award for social and ecological commitment alongside U.S. actor Richard Gere and West African singer Angélique Kidjo. According to Stefan Schulze-Hausmann, the 3 honorary award winners are “role models for people who do not deal with sustainability issues on a daily basis”.
The foundation organizes the congress and awards ceremony in a climate-neutral manner and also supports social projects.
Rea Garvey as honorary award winner
Rea Garvey receives German Sustainability Award – He is one of the most successful singer/songwriters in Germany. After a successful musical start as the frontman of “Reamonn”, Garvey has been on the road as a solo artist since 2011 and has already released four successful albums that have claimed the top spot in the German charts. His singles “Is it Love,” “Kiss Me” and “Wild Love” are top hits. Rea has worked with international artists such as Nelly Furtado, Amy Macdonald, Paul van Dyk, Mary J. Blige. As a long-time jury member of “The Voice of Germany” and protagonist of “Sing meinen Song” he became a fixture on German TV.
Rea Garvey uses his fame as an artist to draw attention to grievances and provide concrete help. Through his popularity as an entertainer, but above all through his authentic personality, he succeeds as an influencer in getting a large audience interested in sustainability with his unmistakably formulated stance.
Rea Garvey´s Projects
For more than 17 years, the musician has supported and accompanied social projects with his foundation “Saving An Angel”, which convince him personally. As founder and ambassador of the foundation, he draws attention to the needs of disadvantaged children. Thus, numerous projects, including Dunkelziffer e.V., Die Arche e.V. and many others, have been supported to improve the lives of children and young people in need. Rea Garvey also does a lot for children on behalf of Kindernothilfe. For example, he performed at the “Life 8” concert in Berlin in 2005, at the ProSieben “Red Nose Day Gala” in 2006 and the year before at Al Gore’s “Live Earth” concert in Hamburg. For his social commitment, he received an honorary Echo at the Echo Awards in 2010.
Since 2011, Rea Garvey has also been one of the founders of the Clear Water organization. After becoming aware of the drinking water problem in Ecuador, the singer is committed to the rights of more than 2,000 families of indigenous people, especially their supply of clean water. The installation and operation of rainwater harvesting systems with specially manufactured filters gives families, as well as local hospitals and schools, access to safe water. The ClearWater project is a collaboration between the indigenous organization Ceibo Alliance, the U.S. organization Amazon Frontlines, and a network of foundations including Saving an Angel, Rainforest Fund, and the Leonardo Dicaprio Foundation.
