Sometimes rocky, sometimes irresistible catchy tunes, sometimes soulful ballads, but always intense and above all live a force: Fury in the Slaughterhouse from Hannover are one of the most successful German bands of the 90s and the last decades.
Fury in the Slaughterhouse – Bands of the 90s
At the end of 1986 the brothers Thorsten and Kai Wingenfelder and three other comrades-in-arms founded the band Fury in the Slaughterhouse in a phase in which Neue Deutsche Welle was already dying out. The Furys clearly stand out from this – they are rockier and sing in English. The first albums like “Fury in the Slaughterhouse” and “Jau” are not yet the most commercially successful, but they quickly establish the cult status of Lower Saxony and with titles like “Time to wonder” or “Won’t forget these days” (they also played the song in the stadium of Hannover 96) they already contain catchy tunes that are still frenetically celebrated at concerts today. The album “Hooka Hey”, which Fury in the Slaughterhouse released in 1991, already reached number 32 in the German sales charts, and the concerts were completely sold out, as the band soon acquired the reputation of playing live very intensively and taking the audience with them.
Fury in the Slaughterhouse – Breakthrough with Radio Orchid
In 1993, Fury in the Slaughterhouse achieved an international breakthrough with the album “Mono” and the hits “Every generation got its own disease” and “Radio Orchid”. The album landed at number 12 in the German charts and the aforementioned singles entered the heavy rotation on MTV. From this point on the Hanoverians were to release eight more albums, but “Mono” remained the commercially most successful album. Altogether the band has sold four million albums. In 1995 the Furys toured again through Germany and the USA and continued to release a new album about every two years, but they couldn’t continue their great success. In between, the individual protagonists of the band also devote themselves to various side projects.
Separate paths and various projects
The guitarist Christof Stein-Schneider founded the “Wohnraumhelden” with various German-language albums between 2003 and 2014. Thorsten Wingenfelder’s project is called “Driftland” and is sung in English as usual, while he produces several German albums with his brother Kai and chooses the common surname as project name. 2008 is then first of all the year of farewell. Once again, Fury in the Slaughterhouse, who has played over 1000 concerts and festival appearances in total, will go on tour and give their farewell concert in their home town Hannover. In 2017, they will perform again in Hannover, this time for three reunion concerts on the occasion of their 30th band anniversary. These concerts were sold out within a very short time so that further concerts should follow. In May 2020 the band takes part in the Autokultur series and will give two concerts in front of 2000 people sitting in their cars during the concert.
Charity and Engagement
Fury in the Slaughterhouse is a band that is always committed and thinks outside the box. For example, various band members participate in projects for the benefit of tsunami victims in Thailand or in Christmas donations for children suffering from cancer. In April 2020, Fury in the Slaughterhouse will release a charity single (“We believe in sometimes”), the proceeds of which will go to the aid organisation “Médecins sans Frontières”.
Fury in the Slaughterhouse greatest Hits
The biggest hits are the aforementioned singles “Radio Orchid” and “Every generation got its own disease” from the album “Mono”, which even sells in the USA in six figures. But “Won’t forget these days” is also a classic catchy tune, and on “Time to wonder” the whole audience sings along with the lyrics and creates a sea of lights from lighters. All fans of the likeable Hanoverians can be happy that there will still be the opportunity to experience the power and intensity of this great German band live.
