Simply Red is a band of superlatives. Founded in 1984, the career highlight of the British soul and pop combo around charismatic singer Mick Hucknall lies in the same decade. The group has sold more than 50 million records to date. There is no end in sight. After a temporary dissolution, the musicians have been back on stage together since 2015. In late summer 2019 Mick Hucknall announces another one, the 12th studio album. It is called “Blue Eyed Soul” and continues the success story of the exceptional band. In November 2019 Mick Hucknall receives the German Sustainability Award in Düsseldorf.
Simply Red Band Profile
The name of the band is supposedly an allusion to the red hair of frontman Mick Hucknall. But it could also be that the singer’s favourite football club was the godfather of the band’s name. This is Manchester United, which is known to be associated with the colour red. Either way, it is clear that Simply Red is musically located between R&B, soul and pop. Characteristic for their music are the sensitive and memorable songs, which are unmistakable since the 80s thanks to the tender voice of Mick Hucknall.
Simply Red – Albums and Singles
In 1985, one year after their foundation, Simply Red released their debut album “Picture Book”. The record was introduced in the same year with the up-tempo number “Money’s Too Tight (To Mention)”, a cover version of the song of the same name by Valentine Brothers. The emotional ballad “Holding Back the Years“ becomes the most successful single on the record. Mick Hucknall composes the song, in which he deals with the separation of his parents, at the age of 17. Until today the track is one of the best and most successful of the band.
1985 marks the beginning not only of a very creative phase, but also of a highly productive one. Simply Red released a total of eleven albums by 2007. Outstanding among them are the albums “New Flame” and “Stars”, which include the hit singles “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” and “Something Got Me Started”. After the temporary dissolution of the band, the comeback album “Big Love” will follow in 2015, which will also storm the charts. In addition, the combo released numerous compilation albums such as the 1996 album “Greatest Hits” as well as four live albums, including a recording of their performance in London in 2006.
Simply Red – The successes in figures
Simply Red is one of the most successful bands ever. This is shown by the bare numbers. From 1985 until today, more than 50 million records have been sold over the counter. In some sources the number 60 million can be found. Even in the digital age, success continues unabated. On the video service YouTube their videos have been clicked more than a billion times. Their most successful albums include “Picture Book” with 3.5 million units sold worldwide, “A New Flame” (4.2 million sales) and the 1995 record “Life”, which is sold more than three million times worldwide. The bestseller, however, remains “Stars“, which became one of the most successful albums of the year with more than nine million records sold in 1991.
Simply Red – Awards
Where great successes are celebrated, the jury members of prize committees are not long in coming. In fact, Simply Red has not only sold many records, but also received many music awards for their albums and songs. Mick Hucknall and Co. even have the most important prize in their account. In 1990 they received a Grammy in the category Best R&B Song for “If You Don’t Know Me by Now”. Three years earlier, the band was nominated for the same prize as Best New Artist of the Year. But the award goes to Bruce Hornsby and the Range. Simply Red won the Brit Award for Best British Band two years in a row, in 1992 and 1992. The next career highlight is 2010, when the Reds receive the Golden Camera for their life’s work.
Simply Red – Separation and Reunification
In 2007 Mick Hucknall announces the imminent end of Simply Red. Just a few months later, the musician released his first solo record. It has the title “Tribute to Bobby” and consists of new recordings of classics of the blues and soul singer Bobby Bland. It shouldn’t be the only solo album of Mick Hucknall. In 2012 “American Soul” will be released, with which the musician once again pays tribute to soul music. But Hucknall won’t be on the road for long without his legendary band. In 2014, 30 years after its founding, Simply Red announces a new tour that will go down in history as the Big Love Tour. The occasion is the title-giving eleventh album, which will be released in 2015.
Simply Red – Comeback with new Album
The last chapter of Simply Red’s story should not be “Big Love”. Five years later, in the summer of 2019, the band announced the release of a new studio album. “Blue Eyed Soul” contains ten tracks and moves stylistically along familiar paths. Already the title gives a hint. “Blue Eyed Soul” alludes to the name of that kind of soul music that is mainly made by white musicians.
