Bananarama Booking- and Artist Information
Who has not danced in the 80s and sung along to the big hits of the girlie band Bananarama? Although the band name is almost a tongue-twister, their hits and lyrics were all the more catchy.
As far as the music and its artists are concerned, this decade really had it in it. Hardly any other style of music was as weird and extravagant as the stars and starlets of the 80s. Because they were above all one thing: extreme in every direction. Whether the clothes, the singers or the performances – everything was under the motto “more is definitely more“.
Especially the big stars of this era like Madonna, Michael Jackson or Prince were at the forefront of these extremes. But also all the other icons from the bands of the 80s made bizarre appearances and wore thick shoulder pads and extravagant huge costume jewelry.
The stars of the 80s can be recognized above all by their hairstyles, because it wasn’t only women who wore the backcombed perm waves with wild manes during this time. Also the male band members had colourful, wild shaggy manes. But they all made a statement and stood for their time: the bands of the 80s.
Bananarama – a pop band of superlatives
Who has not danced in the 80s and sung along to the big hits of the girlie band Bananarama. Although the band name is almost a tongue-twister, their hits and lyrics were all the more catchy. Unforgotten are their songs “Venus”, “Cruel Summer” or their homage to the successful Hollywood actor Robert de Niro with “Robert de Niro’s Waiting”.
The British Girlie Band, which was formed in London in 1981, was able to celebrate great success worldwide over many years and was several times with their hits on the top places of the international charts. Their tours through the big halls of the metropolises all over the world were sold out and the band of the 80s was frenetically acclaimed by their fans.
In Canada, they received gold and platinum for their immense record sales. With their album of the Greatest Hits Collection, they were included in the Guinness Book of Records as the most successful British girl band ever.
The history of Bananarama
The pop band was founded by the three band members Siobhan Fahey, Keren Woodward and Sarah Dallin, and they remained in this formation until 1988. Their producers were the successful team of Tony Swain and Steve Jolley, who had already produced Alison Moyet and Spandau Ballet.
The three successful musicians were able to record their great successes during this time. From their first album “Deep Sea Skiving” they released 4 songs alone. But above all their second record album, which carries the band name Bananarama, became a resounding success.
Among the total of 5 decouplings were their greatest hits like “Cruel Summer” and “Robert de Niro’s Waiting“. This was followed in 1985 by the album “True Confessions” with 4 decoupled songs and their hit “Venus“, which is probably most often associated with the successful pop band.
For this song – and their next album – they worked together with the team Waterman, Stock and Aitken from Great Britain and landed at number 1 of the US-American charts. Until Siobhan Fahey left the band in 1988, the pop band released two more albums entitled “Wow” and a Greatest Hits Collection. Singer Siobhan Fahey married Dave Stewart of Eurythmics and started a new pop band called Shakespeare Sisters with guitarist Marcella Detroit.
At Bananarama she was replaced by Jacquie O’Sullivan and the newly formed trio released their record album “Pop Life” in 1991, from which a total of 3 songs were extracted. Especially the hit “Preacher Man” could record big triumphs and brought it into the charts in Germany and stayed in the British charts in the United Kingdom for some weeks. This was followed by the record album “Please Yourself” with several releases.
Bananarama as Duo
In 1992 Jacquie O’Sullivan left the pop band again and the two remaining musicians Keren Woodward and Sarah Dallin continued as a duo under the same name. The two released their album “Ultra Violet“. The record album “Exotica” produced in 2001 included a cover version of the great hit “Careless Whisper” by George Michael from Wham!
At the Gay Convention in London Bananarama celebrated the 20th anniversary of the pop band and reunited for a short time with the founding member Shiobhan Fahey. Afterwards they produced the albums “Viva” and the one called “Drama“. The resulting song “Look on the Floor” contained the refrain of the great hit of the 80s band My Mine “Hypnotic Tango“.
Bananarama today
In 2017, the successful band toured the world with Siobhan Fahey and performed in the United States, Canada and Europe. In 2019, they released the album “In Stereo” and went on a promotion tour in Great Britain.
The record album brought the successful band back on track, and they reached the British charts. The success of Bananarama is unbroken and the two band members Keren Woodward and Sarah Dallin are still very popular with their fans. Their melodious melodies paired with catchy lyrics find a large following – worldwide.
