ABC is a British pop band from Sheffield founded in 1980. With the band singer and songwriter, Martin Fry became a star in the eighties. When you hear the name of the band ABC, you immediately think of the biggest hit of the British pop group. With “The Look of Love” they have gone down in music history for all time and have played themselves into the hearts of their fans with their languorous song.
Pop band ABC and Martin Fry
Martin David Fry (born 1958) is an English singer, songwriter, composer, musician and record producer. At the beginning of the 80s he became known as co-founder and singer of the pop band ABC. The band released six singles in the 1980s, which rose to the top 20 charts in Great Britain. Among them “Tears Are Not Enough”, “Poison Arrow”, “The Look of Love”, “All of My Heart”, “That Was Then Then but This Is Now” and “When Smokey Sings”. Martin Fry has been a band member of the pop band ABC since its inception and is currently the only official member.
ABC and the music of the 80s – unforgotten forever
Martin Fry wrote for a fan magazine entitled Modern Drugs in 1978, where he first met future ABC band members Mark White and Stephen Singleton. He interviewed them for an article in the magazine. White and Singleton, who had formed the electro-pop band Vice Versa at the time, invited Fry to join their band to play keyboards.
With Martin Fry as lead singer and songwriter, Vice Versa changed her name to ABC and changed her sound to a contemporary pop style. In the meantime, bands such as Duran Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and the Human League were also known for this style of music. Between 1982 and 1991 ABC recorded six studio albums (The Lexicon of Love, Beauty Stab, How to Be a…. Zillionaire, Alphabet City, Up and Abracadabra). The band released an album with the greatest hits, Absolutely. During this time the band underwent numerous personnel changes, with Martin Fry and Mark White being the only permanent members.
After the Zillionaire album, the band ABC almost fell into oblivion temporarily, because Fry had to be treated for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a rare cancer. ABC disbanded in 1991, with Mark White withdrawing from music to pursue his interest in Reiki therapy.
ABC – The Look of Love
When you hear the band ABC, you immediately think of the absolute hit of the British pop group. With “The Look of Love” they have gone down in music history for all time and have played themselves into the hearts of their fans with their languorous song. Also their video clip to the song corresponded completely to their time with bizarre outfits and a small story, which is represented in it.
The children’s film “Mary Poppins” is shown in the music video as well as the film “An American in Paris” with Gene Kelly. The song was released in 1982 and was an extract from her record album “The Lexicon of Love“. With this hit they could place themselves successfully in the British as well as the US-American charts on the upper ranks.
Martin Fry and ABC on new paths
In 1992 the band ABC broke up and guitarist Mark White went some ways. Martin Fry remained loyal to ABC and continued to play solo under the name ABC. He released the album “Skyscraping” from which he decoupled the songs “Stranger Things” and “Skyscraping”.
Martin Fry continued to tour extensively and performed live at events such as the Night of the Proms 2001, where he was supported by a 72-piece orchestra and a 50-piece choir. For a TV appearance of the TV channel VH-1 some band members got together again at short notice for the TV format “Reunited”. In 2008 Fry released the ABC album “Traffic”. In April 2009 Fry and the original drummer David Palmer played the album The Lexicon of Love live at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The band was accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra. In 2016 the album “The Lexicon of Love II” was released – Martin Fry had paused for some years.
The band ABC still consists of the frontman and face of the band Martin Fry. He tours with the singer Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet, one of the big stars of the 80s. They released an album with live acts. Martin Fry’s heart still beats for ABC and his fans thank him for it. And who doesn’t want to continue listening to “The Look of Love” and remember his parties in the 80s?
