From Liverpool into the whole world
Holly Johnson started his musical career with the British punk music band “Big in Japan“. But Holly Johnson became especially famous between 1983 and 1987 with the band Frankie goes to Hollywood.
In 1987 Holly Johnson left the band Frankie goes to Hollywood, which broke up as a result. In spring 1989 he released his first solo album, which made it to number 1 in the British charts. He has been painting a lot since the beginning of the 1980s and during this time he rarely performs musically. His style is characterised by the use of phallic symbols and the examination of homosexuality.
Holly Johnson Comeback in 2011
Since 2011 he has finally been more active in the music business again. In June 2012 he was back in Germany for the first time after a long absence from the stage. At his first concert in Potsdam he played a one-hour mix of new songs and many well-known songs of Frankie goes to Hollywood. During his performances he revives the wild 80s and takes the audience back to those days.
In 2014 the long awaited new album was finally released – his first solo album in 15 years.

At his concerts he thrills with songs like Heaven’s Here, Disco Heaven, Americanos and Love Train. But he also always plays songs of Frankie goes to Hollywood and makes people dance with Relax, The Power of Love, Two Tribes or Watching the Wildlife.
In 2016 he released the song Ascension, which was part of the soundtrack of Eddie the Eagle. His music videos were already colourful and impressive in the days of Frankie goes to Hollywood. In the videos to his own songs Holly Johnson often appears in a suit and a tie and often wears a hat to complete his look. His most famous video is the one for “Love Train“, whose style reminds more of a children’s show than a music video.
To this day he has already worked with many well-known artists such as Brian May of Queen, Frankie Knuckles and Apollo 440. He is not only known as a singer and painter, but also as a songwriter. He wrote not only “Americanos” and “Love Train“, but also “The Power of Love“, “Two Tribes” and “Welcome to the Pleasuredome“, which all caused an international sensation and received several gold and platinum awards.
Charity – Awareness and research
Holly Johnson is suffering from AIDS and is very involved in charity organizations around this topic. He is particularly active in AIDS LIFE and AIDS Memorial Campaign. Thanks to medication, he is now one of the long-term survivors of those suffering from AIDS and can even go on tour again.
