The past and present combined in a musical way

Electroswing – around the turn of the millennium, this music genre emerges, combining modern pop beats with jazzy sounds from the 1920s and 1930s. Driving club sounds and thick bass meet the rhythms, vocals and melodies of swing. Some of the electro or neoswing artists also use world music and gypsy elements in their works. Well-known representatives of the genre from German-speaking countries are, for example, the Dirty Honkers, Tape Five and Parov Stelar. Caravan Palace played a major role in the triumph of electroswing and is undoubtedly one of the most influential bands in the genre.

Caravan Palace – Biografy

The beginnings of the band can be described as rather unusual. The group was formed after a request from a production company looking for music for an old French erotic silent movie. What initially starts as an experiment develops into a serious project in 2005. The three founding members Hugues Payen, Arnaud “Vial” de Bosredon and Charles Delaporte take instrumental training and actively mix in the Paris DJ scene. Loïc Barrouk becomes aware of the musicians and helps them to make their first recordings in the studio and also some gigs. However, since they need more performers for live performances, they recruit three more artists, which they find through MySpace. Today the band consists of Charles Delaporte (composition, bass, programming), Paul-Marie Barbier (piano, drums, vibraphone), Zoé Colotis (vocals), Arnaud “Vial” de Bosredon (composition, guitar, programming), Lucas Saint-Cricq (clarinet, baritone, saxophone) and Martin Berlugue (trombone). In its early days, the group first gained more and more notoriety on the Internet and toured France in 2006 and 2007. In the process, it makes its first festival appearance at the Django Reinhardt Jazz Festival. Finally, Caravan P. obtain a record contract with the Parisian record label Wagram Music.

Since 2008 Caravan P. has been producing hits and albums

After about a year of studio work, “Caravan Palace” is released in October 2008. The debut album reaches number 11 in the French album charts. It also enters the charts in many other European countries. “Caravan Palace” is highly praised for its timeless music and unique blend of old-school swing and modern electronic beats. Two singles from the album, “Jolie Coquine” and “Suzy“, are also released to great acclaim. The subsequent albums “Panic” (2012) and “Lone Digger” (2015) are also bursting with creativity. Both can tie in with the success of the debut album. In 2019, the band releases the single “Miracle“, which provides a foretaste of the band’s third album – “Chronologic”. This one marks a slight change in style. The songs in “Chronologic” are more pop and hip-hop heavy. At the same time, they haven’t lost their dance-friendly electro swing.

Without much promotion or exuberant hype, concert tickets are always sold out quickly, whether in Paris, Mexico City or Berlin. The band can also look forward to constantly rising click numbers on the Internet. On Spotify, they have over 250 million streams. Their YouTube channel also has well over a million subscribers. Their single “Lone Digger” is particularly popular there. The video is a cartoon in which cats and dogs meet in a nightclub. The mixture, in which crocodiles, snakes and zebras also play a role, is reminiscent of a cool Quentin Tarantino-style version of “Fritz The Cat.
