As a figurehead of a generation that demands more climate protection and a more sustainable world, Billie Eilish receives the Honorary Award of the German Sustainability Award.
The US singer and songwriter Billie Eilish (*2001) comes from Los Angeles/USA. She began singing and writing her own songs at an early age. Billie got her first record deal at the age of 15. The single “Bad Guy” from her debut album is a sensational success in 2019. The song, produced by her brother Finneas, stays in the German charts for 66 weeks. In the same year, she becomes the youngest artist to win the Grammy Award in all four main categories with her album and song. In 2020, she contributes the eponymous theme song to the James Bond film “No Time to Die”. Billie Eilish is currently considered the most successful female artist in the music industry – with a particularly large fan base among younger people worldwide. The Standard called her the “figurehead of a generation”.
Billie takes a stance
Billie uses this immense reach (94 million follow her on Instagram alone) in social media and her songs to take a stand and bring her fans with her. Accepting the Grammys for Album of the Year, Finneas says: “We wrote an album about depression, suicidal thoughts and climate change.” The video for her song “All The Good Girls Go To Hell” is a metaphor for a planet that has been irreparably damaged. In the video description, Billie calls for people to support the September 2019 global climate strikes that took place around the Global Climate Action Summit. Under the Youtube video, she writes: “Our Earth is warming faster than ever, ice caps are melting, sea levels are rising, our forests are burning.” The video is viewed 113 million times.
Billie posts a video with Hollywood star Woody Harrelson in which she draws attention to the climate crisis and calls for a “climate emergency”. She not only wants to educate her fans about the urgency of the issue, but also encourage them to take action themselves and join organisations like “Fridays for Future” or “Greenpeace”. The 19-year-old singer herself supports the “Fridays for Future” movement and takes part in demonstrations. Together with Global Citizen, the singer is giving away tickets for her concerts to people who support environmental protection.
Billie Eilish is planning her next tour to be as climate-friendly as possible. At her concerts, she wants to do completely without plastic. In an “Eco Village” on the concert grounds, visitors are to be made aware of climate protection and informed about how they can lead a more sustainable lifestyle. Billie lives vegan and encourages her fans to eat less meat.
Artist Relations Manager Stefan Lohmann also welcomes the award immensely and commented:
“This also shows the huge potential of sustainability – also for brands and events – and we are only at the beginning! Sustainability and sustainable business is not the problem, but the solution! The far-reaching opportunities for business and culture are often not yet seen. I am pleased that the German Sustainability Award always manages to open the eyes of business – and everyone else – and to make sustainable companies visible and thus promote them.
The positive impact of this event is enormous. Billie Eilish: one of the most famous artists on the planet receives the award from outer space! Congratulations go out to space and back.
Yes, I am happy that I/we managed to do that. Thanks to the whole team! I am looking forward to the conference and award events.”
